Department of Justice and Community Safety

The vision of the Department of Justice and Community Safety is for a justice and community safety system that works together to build a safer, fairer and stronger Victoria.

The department leads the delivery of justice and community safety services in Victoria by providing policy and organisational management. Its extensive service delivery responsibilities range from managing the State’s prison system, to providing consumer protection and enforcing court warrants.

Victorian Inspectorate

The Victorian Inspectorate oversees 14 integrity bodies (including IBAC and the Victorian Ombudsman).  Our purpose is to provide Parliament and the people of Victoria with independent assurance that the bodies we oversee act lawfully, properly and with integrity.

Victoria Legal Aid

Victoria Legal Aid (VLA) offer legal representation, family dispute resolution and non-legal advocacy to those who need it most.

VLA provide information, education, advice and legal representation on different kinds of matters including family breakdown, child protection, family violence, criminal matters, social security, mental health, discrimination, immigration, tenancy and debt.

Deakin Law School

Deakin Law School trains the next generation of lawyers and professionals, who are empowered to use legal skills in an array of global careers.

The school’s new clinical program is aimed at developing lawyering skills in our graduates as well as making a strong, positive contribution to our communities. We’re pioneering experiential learning, and providing students access to real clients in exciting domains such as entrepreneurship and new business ventures.

Victorian Legal Service Board + Commissioner

The Victorian Legal Services Board + Commissioner (VLSB+C) is responsible for regulating lawyers in Victoria. We grant licences to lawyers and investigate and act on enquiries and complaints from the public.

The VLSB+C educate lawyers about current and emerging issues to drive innovation, compliance and harm reduction, and improve the public’s understanding of the legal sector to ensure all Victorians have access to effective and high-quality justice.

Law Institute of Victoria

The Law Institute of Victoria (LIV) is the peak body for the legal profession representing lawyers and people working in the law in Victoria.

LIV's members offer their commitment, diversity and expertise to help shape the laws of Victoria and to ensure justice for all. To help members of the public find the right lawyer for their needs, the LIV also operates the free Find Your Lawyer referral service.

Victorian Bar

The Victorian Bar is an association of more than 2,200 barristers, with a proud tradition of providing strong and independent legal representation and advice without fear or favour to all in the community.

Office of the Victorian Ombudsman

The Office of the Victorian Ombudsman promotes fairness, integrity and respect for human rights.

It holds the Victorian public sector accountable to the people of Victoria using a range of functions and powers, including the investigation of administrative actions in the Victorian public sector and matters that might be referred to it by the Victorian Parliament.

Federation of Community Legal Centres

The Federation of Community Legal Centres Victoria is the peak body for Victoria’s 46 Community Legal Centres.

For 50 years, our members have been at the forefront of helping those facing economic, cultural, or social disadvantage by providing free legal services, reshaping how people access justice, creating stronger more equitable laws, and promoting a more accountable government and democracy.
